I proposed a project to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art to make a full-size billboard with a message about art. SF MOMA sponsored the project in collaboration with Gannet Outdoor, the major outdoor advertising company in the San Francisco Bay area at the time. This was in 1982 when oversized billboards were still painted by hand copied from the photos and layouts provided by art departments of ad agencies. In this case I was the art department and got to watch my idea reproduced about 30 feet wide and ten feet tall.
The billboard went up in downtown San Francisco, on Polk Street where it crosses Broadway.
